Four beautiful and rare hand-painted bindings by the Bath bookbinder Cedric Chivers are included in the next Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood Rare Book Auction on 19th March 2014.

 Cedric Chivers (BK11)

No doubt influenced by the wonderful bindings of Edwards of Halifax, of a hundred years earlier, Chivers perfected at the end of the nineteenth century a method incorporating a fine watercolour, sometimes even heightened with the addition of mother-of-pearl in a vellum binding.

 Cedric Chivers (BK11)

The painting on paper was overlaid with a layer of finely skived translucent vellum, that way the painting was sealed, thus protecting the painting.

Examples of these fine and delicate bindings included in the sale are a 1909 edition of The Deserted Village; A’Kempis, Of the Imitation of Christ, 1898; and Baroness Von Hutten, Our Lady of the Beeches, 1907; each with an estimate of £800-£1,200.

The original English State Lottery ran from 1694 until 1826. It ran for over 250 years but under pressure from the opposition parties the Government of the day declared a final lottery in 1826.

In the next Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewoods rare book sale on 19th March 2014, there is a collection of twenty slip broadsides advertising the lottery tickets, which can be purchased from W Betts in Colchester.

 Lottery broadsides (BK11)

The broadsides advertise prizes up to £30,000, with one stating "The very last lottery but one."

Another brodside includes the doggerel “For as Lott’ries are now drawing near their last breath, and the day is so fine, I’ll be in at the Death.”

Our Spring Antiquarian Book Sale (to be held on the 19th March 2014) contains a manuscript book illustrated with fine pen and wash sketches related to The Grange, which was a famous old house that dated back to the time of Charles II.

The house was the home of one of the most famous novelists of the eighteenth century, Samuel Richardson, author of Pamela, Clarissa, Sir Charles Grandison, etc. One hundred years later is became the home of the painter Edward Burne-Jones and the poet William Allingham.

It was badly neglected during the Second World War and fell into a state of serious dilapidation to the extent that the house was finally demolished in 1957.

 The Grange (BK11)

Written just two years before its demolition, the manuscript  shows a high degree of calligraphic skill, the anonymous writer recalls the important history of the house and pleas for it’s survival.

 The Grange (BK11)

The book is offered for sale with two other examples of calligraphy, with an estimate of £100-£150.

The Twenty-shilling series of colour plate books produced by A & C Black publishers of London & Edinburgh were a masterpiece of Edwardian British letterpress three-colour printing. They were published from 1901 onwards, each with up to 100 colour plates bound in highly decorative cloth bindings.

At a time when foreign travel was rare, these magnificent volumes brought the world into the living rooms of the Edwardian family home.

Over ninety volumes were published, all at the affordable price of one pound. Many were illustrated by leading watercolour artists of the day.

A one-owner collection of this highly collectable series is being offered for sale, mainly in lots of mutiples of six books, in our next antiquarian book auction on the 19th March 2014. The pick of these is a lot that includes five volumes still in their rare original dust-wrappers.
