Review Entries for Day Tuesday, February 04, 2014

During the 1930s, the publishers Seeley, Service & Co Ltd, of Shaftesbury Avenue, London published a series of volumes with a sporting theme, from cricket to yacht sailing, which were all published under the generic title “The Lonsdale Library”.

In our rare book sale on 19th March 2014 is a copy of Salmon Fishing in this series. However, it is not just any edition. It is by the well known sporting writer Eric Taverner and is one of only 275 copies numbered and signed by the author.

 Salmon Fishing (BK11)

Published in 1931 and bound in sumptuous full dark blue morocco, it includes within a sunken mount (protected by a perspex ‘window’ set into the rear cover) real samples of salmon flies illustrating the various schools of modern fly dressing.

There are examples of the March Hare, Blue Charm, Pink Lady, Black Silk, Turkey Jackson, etc, which have all have been tied specially for this volume by the fishing experts Messrs Hardy Bros.

This rare volume is expected to make in the region of £250.
