Raymond Briggs captured the hearts of a generation when he first introduced us to the Snowman in 1978. Thirty five years on The Snowman has become part of the legend that is Christmas, having been shown every year since 1982 and this past Christmas saw the arrival of the sequel The Snowman and the Snow Dog.

The Antiquarian book auction to be held at the Dowell Street Honiton Saleroom in East Devon, includes a lovely little collection of twelve books by or illustrated by Raymond Briggs. These are together with six Christmas cards, all featuring characters from the Snowman, which are signed by Raymond (BK9/62)

The collection includes a first edition from 1986 of The Snowman Pop Up. There is also a First Edition of Ethel and Ernest dated 1998, in unique strip cartoon format, which is Brigg’s own unique style. It tells a story of his parents.

Arguably Raymond Brigg’s most significant book is included, it certainly was his most controversial, the 1982 first hardback edition of When the Wind Blows!, which deals with the futile attempts at self preservation that the government of the day were trying to instruct its citizens to carry out, in the event of a nuclear war.

On a somewhat cheerier note, there are six character Christmas cards, all signed by Raymond Briggs.

This unusual lot of Raymond Briggs books and Christmas cards carries a modest pre-sale estimate of £150-£200 and more information on the other books in the lot can be viewed in the catalogue (BK9/62).

You may have already read about the Samuel Taylor Coleridge bible we have coming up for sale in the Antiquarian book auction on 20th February in our East Devon salerooms in Honiton. If not, check out my previous blog.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the founders of the Romantic Movement was one of the foremost English poets of the 19th Century, so equally inspiring amongst the collection of Coleridge items in the 20th February 2013 auction is a first edition of probably Coleridge’s most famous poem, Kubla Khan, (BK9/127), allegedly written one night after taking opium and reading a work describing Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and emperor of China, Kubla Khan.

It is finely bound by ‘Tout’ in full calf, but the front hinge is cracking. However it is complete with all three half titles present.

This fabulous lot carries a pre-sale estimate of £1,000-£1,500. If you are interested in any of the other lots relating to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, please take a look at the catalogue to find out more.

One of the most interesting collections coming up in the Antiquarian book auction on 20th February 2013 at the Honiton Saleroom are eight exciting lots relating to Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834) which are association copies with signatures and inscriptions of immediate family members.

The most significant of these is his own family bible (BK9/131) which is dated 1790. It bears his signature and genealogical notes in the manuscript hand of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

This unique item bears the charming inscription in Coleridge’s hand ‘Given to me by Joseph Cottle after my marriage (signed) S T Coleridge’. Joseph Cottle (1770-1853) was Coleridge’s friend and publisher.

The pre-sale estimate for lot 131 (BK9/131) is £2,000-£3,000, but I will watch with keen interest as to whether this unique lot exceeds these expectations.
