Review Entries for Day Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Carlo Giuliano was an Italian goldsmith and jeweller who operated in London in the 19th Century. Known for his unique enamel work, Giuliano is believed to have been the creator of a pendant with black and white enamel made as a mourning piece for the Queen upon the death of Prince Alfred, son of Queen Victoria. Giuliano used various enamel techniques which were widely used on jewellery pieces like his popular lonzenge-shaped pendants. You can find one of these pendants in our quarterly fine sale on 3rd July 2013 (FS19/156).

A Carlo Giuliano gold, garnet and seed pearl pendant (FS19/156)

The pendant on offer in the quarterly fine sale is a late 19th Century enamelled gold, garnet and seed pearl example of openwork foliate scroll design, which is decorated with enamel in shades of green, black and white. It has two suspended seed pearl drops and a central single demantoid garnet. The reverse of the pendant displays the makers plaque 'C & A G' for Carlo and Arthur Giuliano. Contained in its original red leather fitted case this pendant is expected to fetch £700-£900 when it is offered for sale in the fine jewellery auction of our Summer Fine Sale starting on 3rd July 2013 at our Okehampton Street Salerooms in  Exeter, Devon.
