Louis Van Staaten (1836-1909) must have painted dozens (maybe hundreds!) of these very accomplished and detailed views of Dutch harbours and canals. Invariably they are fresh and crisp and the two in our next Picture Sale are no exception.

watercolour of the statue of eros in piccadilly circus by william francis longstaff (1879-1953)

A waterolour of the Statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus painted by the artist
William Francis Longstaff (1879-1953)

This watercolour of the Statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus is an evocative post-WWII period image by William Francis Longstaff (1879-1953). It depicts a newspaper seller, trams and shoppers in the fading light of a damp winter day with reflections and bright lights reflected off the wet street. The pre-sale estimate is £150-£200 and the watercolour is part of our next Picture Sale on 19th November 2013 at our salerooms in Exeter.

Edmund George Warren was one of the first traditional landscape artists to be influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites.

Edmund George Warren (1834-1909) lived first in London, then later in Devon and was acknowledged as the one of the first traditional landscape artists to be influenced by Pre-Raphaelite ideas of colour, observation and attention to detail. One of two paintings by Warren in our fine art sale on Wednesday, 3rd July 2013 is titled A Devonshire Valley Farm, Autumn Morning, Market Day (FS19/257) and is estimated at £800-£1,200.

Edmund George Warren - A Devonshire Valley Farm (FS19/257)

The painting shows Pre-Raphaelite influence in the colour combinations of red and rich shades of green and the tonal range from summer sky to a shadowy avenue of trees. The other work by Warren in the July 2013 sale is a watercolor titled Haymaking (FS19/256) estimated at £400-£600, which has equally confident colour combinations and tones.

In 2011, we sold a small private collection of pictures that included two paintings by Warren: The Lock Gate (FS10, lot 272) for £3,150 and A Devonshire Lane (FS10, lot 273) for £2,200 - both of which had strong Pre-Raphaelite influence.

There is a charming and amusing oil painting of St Ives by Rod Pearce in our Selected Picture Sale on 23rd July 2013.

 rod pearce - st ives

Rod Pearce - St Ives

The painting mocks the cramped town with fishermen’s cottages back to back along steep steps and cobbles. Surmounting the scene is a lighthouse and weather vane. The artist Rod Pearce lived in St Ives in the 1940s and has been a regular visitor all his life. This painting is estimated at £80-£120 and is one among over 150, 19th and 20th century oil paintings, watercolours, minatures and prints that will be sold at our auction rooms in Honiton on 23rd July 2013.

Is there a Hercule Poirot in you? In our fine picture auction that will be held as part of our Summer Fine Art Sale on the 3rd July 2013 there are many pictures by well-known and documented artists.

However, there are also, as in any fine art auction house picture catalogue, a number of attributed to or circle of a certain known artist entries. Some examples from our next auction are:-

circle of charles hunt (fs19/lot 222)

Circle of Charles Hunt (FS19/222)

attributed to james holland (fs19/lot 219)

Attributed to James Holland (FS19/219)

 manner of claude vernet (fs19/227)

Manner of Claude Vernet (FS19/227)

 after murillo (fs19/224)

After Murillo (FS19/224)

These are catalogue descriptions for pictures not thought in the auction house’s opinion to be by the hand of the named artist;  but similar to or of the same period, but not by the artist; or a copy by a later unknown hand.

However, do you know better? Has your detective work brought you to a different conclusion? Is there what is known in the trade as a  "sleeper" about!  Buy or ask for a loan catalogue, visit our fine art catalogues online, come to one of our pre-sale viewing days, bring your magnifying glass and do some detective work of your own. "Finds" are made on a weekly basis in London auction rooms; perhaps too in Exeter! Surely not with our level of expertise. Peut etre oui, peut etre non, mes amis!

Stanhope Alexander Forbes (1857-1947) was the “Father” of the Newlyn School movement.  Born in Dublin, he studied in Paris and at the RA Schools. Moved to Newlyn with his wife to be Elizabeth Adela Armstrong, a great painter in her own right, in 1884. Many artists followed; Harold Harvey; Henry Scott Tuke; Frank Bramley ; Fred Hall; Charles Walter Simpson and many others. The list of talent and recognised artists is seemingly endless .

Stanhope Alexander Forbes - Fishermen repairing nets (FS19/263)

There is a Stanhope Alexander Forbes (FS19/263) in our sale next week which is a beautiful study of fishermen repairing nets. This was a subject Stanhope Forbes focused intently on during his early years in Newlyn. The sketch is signed and has great provenance as a gift to a former pupil of Stanhope Alexander Forbes. Scenes such as the one depicted in this lovely canvas, just 23 x 30cms, can still be seen today around the small fishing harbours of Cornwall. With an estimate of £2,000-£3,000, it is a great way of owning a work by a master of his craft, one of the very famous of our British Impressionist School artists, for a relatively small sum! It is to be sold in our Fine Picture auction on Wednesday, 3rd July 2013.

Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942) was a talented painter of moors, coast, sea and landscape and was particularly skillful at capturing the particular local light and weather. As a plein air painter, Widgery often worked in watercolour and some of his most accomplished works show a close understanding of nature. We regularly sell watercolours, gouache and oil paintings by Frederick John Widgery. In particular,  we are offering a View of Row Tor, Dartmoor (FS19/245).

The estimate on this Frederick John Widgery painting, which is in gouache, is £200-£300.

Our 23rd October 2013 sale of fine paintings also includes a painting by Frederick John Widgery  - The Upper Exe, which will be offered with a pre-sale estimate of £300-£500. This is an oil on canvas measuring 44 x 59cm.

We have a painting from the Circle of Sir Francis Grant in our next fine sale. It is a charming family portrait of two Scottish boys shows them having a short break from scrapping around and playing (FS19/206).

circle of sir francis grant (fs19/206)

Circle of Sir Francis Grant (FS19/206)

Their faces are slightly flushed and in the foreground on the floor is a spinning top and one of their Tam O’Shantas. The boys are dressed in red tunics and posed in a theatrical looking balcony interior with an early Victorian armchair draped in an Indian paisley silk shawl and on a pedestal behind is a neo-classical urn.

However, the star of the show is a very graceful-looking rocking horse with leather bridle and horse hair mane. We have catalogued the painting as Circle of Sir Francis Grant, an important Scottish portrait painter whose subjects included Queen Victoria and other distinguished aristocratic and political figures of the time. The family portrait is offered on 3rd July 2013 in the fine picture auction with an estimate of £1,200-£1,800.

We have been fortunate to sell a good collection of paintings by the East Devon based artist, Alan Cotton.

In April 2013, we offered a group of seven paintings by Cotton, which included views of Hartland Point on the North Devon coast (FS18/301) and (FS18/302), Provence in France (FS18/306) and East Hill close to the coast at Sidmouth(FS18/305).

In our picture sale on 3rd July 2013, there is an atmospheric view overlooking Florence which was painted in the 1980s.

Alan Cotton moved to Devon in the 1960s, was a lecturer and academic at Exeter University and Rolle College. He now has a studio in Colaton Raleigh and by Royal Appointment in 2005 he was the official tour artist for the Prince of Wales on a trip to Sri Lanka and Australasia. This view overlooking Florence by Alan Cotton has an estimate of £1,500-£2,000.

The Spanish Still Life oil painting by Antoni Clave (FS18/402) attracted more pre-sale interest that any of the other paintings in the Quarterly Fine Art Sale held on 24th and 25th April 2013.

spanish still life by antoni clave (fs18/402)

Spanish Still Life By Antoni Clave (FS18/402)

Clave was a well known and celebrated Catalan painter who trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and his work is influenced by artists such as Bonnard, Vuillard and Roualt. He is well known for his lyrical abstractions and mixed media works incorporating collage. The 1955 Still Life by Clave sold by Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood last week was a very powerful image in dramatic saturated colour titled Nature Morte Rouge. The painting had good and interesting provenance, which is always a bonus, having been exhibited by Arthur Tooth in London in 1955 and it also had the distinction of being unsold in a Christies Contemporary Art Sale in 1990 when the estimate was £30,000-£40,000. This time the painting caused great interest and with a more realistic estimate was competed for by a number of telephone and internet bidders and sold for  £11,500.

The watercolour view of Teignmouth from Shaldon (FS18/359) looking west along the South Devon Coast was painted around 1820 and is in the style of William Payne who has a particular watercolour paint, Payne’s Grey, named after him.

English School Circa 1820 - Teignmouth from the West

In the foreground is a small Devon farmhouse and along the coast, looking to Exmouth, are various fishing boats. My favourite details are in the activity and buildings and boats in Teignmouth harbour. From the left side there is a fish market on the beach and the main beach and promenade are busy with fashionable Regency holiday makers. The best bit though is just off the beach where a team of fishermen and netting a shoal of bass! The estimate for this watercolour is £200-£300.
