Review Entries for Day Tuesday, January 14, 2014

From 19th century romance to 20th century realism; in the same sale is a collection of small oil paintings by an East End criminal. The group of eight oils (FS21/372) by Jim Gilbert, who died in 1995 are melancholic and sombre and reflect the artist's tough life, mental illness and confinement.

The pictures depict the street life of the East End including some intimate family groups in a harsh and realist way. The paintings are estimated at £200-£300 each.
