One of the great joys of being an auctioneer is in part re-living your childhood, a fact that is certainly true when cataloguing the Specialist Sporting & Collectors Sale of 18th September 2013 at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood's Dowell Street saleroom, Honiton.

With original boxed toys that you remember driving your parents mad with demands for, it is extremely satisfying to finally get hold of them albeit then to only wonder what all the fuss was about! Perhaps its will always be a ‘boys and their toys’ thing or the fact we never grow up, but even seeing original boxed Action Man figures or Scalextric cars can be intoxicatingly nostalgic.

It is this feeling that has driven the market from strength to strength with each new generation eager to reclaim a piece of their childhood memories.

In and age where the internet seems to leave nothing to the imagination, looking back at the modest poses of a collection of Erotic postcards to be offered in Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood’s forthcoming Sporting & Collectors sale 18th September 2013, you might wonder why collectors would be so keen.

Many of the cards are of ‘artistic’ poses and include several copies of famous nude sculptress and drawings. However, it is the few cards of young French ladies revealing their underwear in public, that turn the tide from ‘artistic’ to (for want of a better word) porn.

It shouldn’t really be that much of a shock. If you have even seen the brothel houses of Pompeii or the graphic cartoons of Cruickshank, you realise that far from the perception of modesty and virtuosity, sex and pornography has always been around. (Hence I have always considered auctioneering as the second oldest profession!)

That such images would have been considered shocking by the moral majority of the early 20th century is what drives the value of these cards above the typical topographical postcards. International interest form collectors should easily push the price towards the top end of a pres ale £200-£300 estimate.

As a well established sale on the auction calendar, Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood’s forthcoming Sporting & Collectors Sale on 18th September 2013 is eagerly awaited by many collectors. This year, in particular, philatelists will be keen to see perhaps the best selection of stamps to be offered for many years.

The stamp section within the auction has been catalogued by consultant Stuart Billington, who has been impressed by the range of ‘good quality old time collections and albums’. With estimates from low hundreds to several thousands, there is a broad range of areas and categories for collectors. Among the highlights is a collection of St Helena stamps (carrying an estimate of £600-£800) and an interesting 1861 stationary card used to Singapore.

The Stamp Auction has always enjoyed a strong national and international following with high bidding and hammer prices. This year’s selection will no doubt deliver on a promising selection.
